I have alot of misaje in various tanks. They do exhibit darker color - but not all the time. The female also show dark color due to some reasons unknown to me. But that is normal. Sometimes they can turn into deep purple and I suspected it is due to environment, dimness of light, territorial dispute and/or fighting for female(s). The one thing I notice often is that whenever I do weekly water change, all the males start to flare with each other. This, I think has to do with breeding mode due to cooler water, new water and/or re-establishing territory. They are truly beautiful when they do this flaring dance.
