I agree with Ron Shulz that indoor brine shrimp culture gives a low yield and that outdoor culture would be a good method, climate permitting.
I have used Spirulina and any yeast in indoor culture but strong light that promotes algae growth improves the yield. I have always used a sponge filter much as if it was a fry rearing tank. I know there are different species of Artemia but using the Utah nauplii I have never found it necessary to have the salinity double normal seawater. A Sp. G. of 1.025 to 1.035 seems to work well. I have used ten gallon aquariums to 30 gal garbage cans. I used to use the waste water from reef tank water changes plus a little extra salt to grow brine shrimp.
At 80F they may begin reproducing at about 21 days.
My experience has been that once the shrimp mature they lay cysts that hatch but not enough to be self sustaining. Some have argued with me that brine shrimp eggs must be dried before they can hatch but I don't find that's true. Eventually, enough shells accumulate that separation similar to using bbs is necessary before giving them to the fish.
Even though the return is poor it's an interesting project.
