Re: [Killietalk] Moina from peat
"How come I never noticed this phenomenon before?"
Response: just luck.
I have a 50 g plastic tub moina culture that sits outside year round. Last
winter, of course they died out when it got cold, down to -19F a few times.
This spring when it warmed I was curious if they would come back when things
thawed. Yes, they did. The resting eggs survived the winter in the horse
manure substrate and this summer's culture is as good as last years.

Subject: [Killietalk] Moina from peat
Hi everybody,
Early this month I tried to hatch an old peat with eggs from Austrolebias
bellottii. No fry emerged. However, after a few days I noticed movements in
the small hatching container and could collect about ten seemingly mature
Moina. In three weeks time I managed to raise a culture from these
individuals. I presumed the Moina had survived as adults in the peat since
they looked mature when I found them so I tried to check this theory with an
experiment. I put a batch of Moina in peat which I wetted after ten days
without any survivors present. So, I guess it was resting eggs present in
the peat from Moina who survived earlier feeding in the bellottii tank. They
hatched when wetting the peat and grew very fast too adult size. How I guess
newly hatched fry quickly feed of nauplie when present and that I was more
observant than usual since I really needed a hatch of bellottii. Has anybody
similar experiences with Moina?
