Yeah, thought I meant "same function" (not the same stuff per se) or is
Amquel + that notorious "water conditioner" which does the additional
disservice of "irritating" a slime coat on the fish via formaldehyde (or
some other noxious compound)?

.anyway, just out of curiosity: is "Ultimate" likewise one of those smelly
formaldehyde based "water conditioners"? .I wasn't sure, so I stuck with
that ChloAm-X product, thinking I didn't need any additional tricks beyond
primarily chlorine removal (w/Ammonia fighting being a secondary perk)

It's not the same.  It was developed by the same guy and is essentially an
updated version that combines the best of Amquel and Novaqua into a single
formula.  Based on what I've heard, Kordon has screwed around with the
formulation of Amquel and Novaqua and my experiences with the Amquel + have
been awful.  I find Ultimate to be the only product that allows me to keep
live fish in my water.  All my goofy losses stopped as soon as I switched to
Ultimate.

water changes caused "gasping"...the product was recommended by Bill or
someone, and BTW I just told Sue that stuff is pretty good, even works for
dealing w/ammonia build up when shipping fish

sold by JEHMCO is in fact the same formulation as the OLD Kordon Product
