The best paint to use for backs, side or bottoms of aquariums is Rustoleum oil base enamel. I have been painting aquariums with this for years. It lasts forever, water doesn't bother it, and is easy to remove if you ever need to. I have found that using one of the sponge brushes is best for applying the paint. Use the sponge brushes with a wooden handle, the foam is much nicer on these. All you do is lay on a coat and let it sit for a day to dry and it's ready to go. I have actually had a tank crack on the back and not leak because of the coat of paint on it. To remove all you do is use a razor blade scrapper and it comes off in ribbons. A quart is usually $7 - $8. You can also use Ace Hardwares brand about a buck cheaper than rustoleum. Be sure it is the oil base enamel and not latex. Latex will not work. And yes to the nay sayers it is non-toxic once it's dried.
