Re: [Killietalk] Killietalk Digest, Vol 49, Heat Losses

Larry, everyone: I could write a short book on inadvertently killing fish
(actually this is an abridged long winded whine)

...fortunately, there have been very few times I've had to rent;
unfortunately this is one of them...and you are at the mercy of the
landlords:
-broke AC in apt bldg: lost entire upper rack minus nothos
-winter 06, a different landlord took an illegal 72hrs to replace furnace;
lost the nothos finally, plus "Northern" SA annuals
-and this same "uninsulated" shack has open rafters with exposed copper
water pipes (which condensate depending on conditions)...Oh and dripping
condensate from copper pipes kills fish also <eventually>
-and of course, what gets cold in winter, also gets equally hot in the
summer, and heat kills an entirely different set of killifish
-then there are the summer algae blooms, and the claims by the water dept
that they add nothing "extra" to the water, but then you notice your cheapo
dechlor no longer works and your fish gasp at every water change

...Climate? eastern Wash is paradise compared to the southern Great Lakes;
which has massive temp swings also, except that somehow it also precipitates
like "western Washington"...my 2 cents: buy good dechlor, don't rent unless
you have to, and unless you are a mosquito or oak tree, avoid the S.Great
Lakes like the other 200 million sunbelt bound US residents... :-/

I have had to almost give up on Killies since moving back to Eastern WA from
Seattle. Only a very few can make it through the worst weeks when its 115F
plus outside. I have air conditioning but it still reaches up to 88F inside.

The suggestions to get air conditioning is so original. Not everyone has a
few spare grand to have a modern climate control system. I just try to work
with species that demonstrate the ability to live through the worst of the
heat. This one of the reasons I specialize in Discus since they thrive in
high temperatures. Still, I miss not having to worry about my Killies in the
Summer.
