Re: [Killietalk] Diapterons: defect genetic or enviroment

Hello All,

I have found significant spinal deformities in hyperthermic conditions as
well. Enhanced considerably in very soft water. Case in point. Fp. Korup
National Park raised in 30ppm hardness at 84F and Riv. weberi at 50ppm and
86F. All juveniles of both species demonstrating 100% deformity. All
other fish raised at normal temp ranges for the species in the same hardness
developed normally.

I think this is a cumulative effect. Not only were they growing at a
tremendous rate but the water lacked sufficient nutrients to provide for
proper bone growth.

Enzymes are keyed in at certain temps. Too high or too low and the enzyme
is denatured or deactivated. The low calcium and mineral levels compound
ths issues in developing a proper bone structure.

In these particular cases i would feel comfortable using them as breeders.
Knowing that it is metabolic in nature rather than genetic. I would do so
under careful observation to assure that the offspring were normal.

ON another note. Fulgens at 24C may cause other issues. Although you may
gain normal development you may have 94% males. One of my good friends
produced 50young 47 males and 3 females. So I would stay a tad closer to
20-21C if you can. Seems to improve ratios without impeding development.

I also find that despite the fact that Fulgens and other Diapterons require
very soft water to breed. They do not necessarily require those conditions
for proper growth. I often raise my young in water of 120 ppm which
actually seems to improve growth rates.

As some food for thought on temps vs. development. Wouldn't it be prudent
for a fish to breed and allowing fry to be grown in the most optimal of
locations. Maybe in the shallowest of areas to provide food, shelter, and
warmth. Maybe even areas where the sunlight breaks through the rainforest
canopies???? The fish endure in the BEST niche!

God Bless, Lee <><
