Re: [Killietalk] Commercial imports; what to label them?
I've received fish that I'm certain weren't what they were labeled to be. Someone with lessor experience wouldn't have noticed and could have put out more incorrect fish.
There are a lot of people having easy access to killies...who may not care a much. I think there are numerous instances where some kid that wants his gardneri to have a location...so he labels them with one.
Fish can jump. Eggs can stick to a finger into the wrong bag.
I worry about these as much as anything.

Ken,
Wait a minute You want the meaning of life!
Here are some points - killies come in, whether we bring them in or not.
Collectors collect and commercial people try to make money. So relax.
Human lifespans are short, so we can't "warehouse" all species. Yes the sun
will go out. But if we hybridize our fish, we could lose some beautiful
populations before the next convention. You will still need sunscreen by
then.
Long labels will not harm you. Those who want the information will have it
available, those who don't won't write it down because it seems silly to
them. I figure we should always err on the side of information.
As for goals and objectives, if you don't have them, make them. There are
plenty of people in the AKA who have taken the time and energy to determine
what they want to do with their hobby/knowledge/skills. I like this thread
because they are presenting ideas to see how they mesh together with other
AKAer's ideas. If past experience rings true, pretty soon, someone will try
to throw a wrench in the works with some kind of wild attack on someone else
and the whole thread will grind to a halt, but for now there is a lot of
thought and there are a lot of tangible goals on the table.

Thing about labeling and such is it is a supportive tool for hobby wide

the tiresome part may be that nobody or no "body" has ever exactly defined
what those goals and objectives are...
then there is the thing about bringing in more species...this point was
touched upon earlier, but IMO needs addressing...
Barry and others point about conservation is valid, but at what end?...I can
see the whole damn thing getting silly/unweidly:
probably got the point....
...and what is our purpose here; to beat the rain forest bulldozers and
"warehouse" every killiefish on the "world grid" for next million years?
...all the while inbreeding/preserving the genetics from 6 pairs till the
sun goes "white dwarf" and all 200 trillion individuals of homo sapiens has
evolved into disconnected "floating brains"...
I'm not pro/con, for/against conservation or "hybridizing" or really
anything..just demonstrating all these "particulars" are really without any
concerted effort or tangible (pre-defined) goals
