Re: [Killietalk] Commercial imports; what to label them?
Hi All,
Sorry for continuing the beating of the horse, but maybe what is needed is a general frame of reference. No, not a relativistic one, but a agreed geographic convention that can function as the base - layer for all locations and collection data. For example, if the geographic space is simplified into spatial units, other than Lat & Long, we could place each set of data for a particular collection inside the "box", even if multiple sets (sympatric) occur. The map would appear to be similair to the current digital camo that our soldiers wear. It would not matter what style of location code would be used because, as a International hobby, we could have the collector enter the data in a registery that would show up as a list of geographic attributes for the area in question. For example, So and so collect a species. They enter the GPS point. This spot, whatever the accuracy, will be one place in the generalised area. The generalised area's fu nction would be to attach any en
try (n
ame) to any coordinate in the box. The box would be labeled some easy to remember, alpha numeric code that represents the boundaries of the area. That way, we would not have to worry about the cumbersome numbers associated with the coordinate system. Even if it is an intersection of two laterite muddy roads, the spot can be coded into the box. The collector used a map to get the name and mileage of the spot in the first place. So, even if we do not get GPS info, we can find a suitable solution for the mapped tropical intersection.
Anyway, just a thought. There actually may be a product that does this already. All the killie hobbyist of the world would just have to agree on the base layer!
