Re: [Killietalk] Commercial imports; what to label them?

The whole thing seems too complex to me. Following this
discussion makes my head spin. Not to mention the 1000's of new fish
codes that would have to be tracked and kept separate. It appears, to
me anyway, that the hobby would be better served by settling on a
"typical" standard for each species and sub-species.
Take gardneri for instance. A "standard" gardneri Akure and a
standard gardneri nigerianus, etc. could be selected and maintained.
There would then be a half dozen or so different gardneri sub-species
maintained in the hobby. This is manageable, and if one sub-species of
gardneri goes extinct in the wild, it would be preserved. Adding the
collection codes means having 100 different gardneri to maintain. Ain't
gonna happen! Further complicating this with different collections
would then mean that 1000's of lines of gardneri would have to be
maintained as separate populations. Not only is this impossible from a
practical standpoint, but the lack of genetic diversity would ruin many
lines. And that is just one species!
Under this scheme, new importations would help strengthen the
Akure line for instance.

Just my ignorant observation

Richard,
This is a very good point, so let's take it a step further. Since few
importers are likely to bring in shipments of the same species from the
same country in the same month, we might want to consider adding a
designation for the importer to the code. For example, if I were to
bring in a shipment in August 07, the code could be AD CI 08-07, with AD
for Anubias Design. I am expecting Aplocheilus blockii to come in on
Sunday from India, so I would then list them as A. blockii AD CI 08-07.
That would provide a means to differentiate shipments coming in from
different exporters that may be from different locations. Does this
make sense to anyone else or is that just making the system too
complicated?
  Mark
