Re: [Killietalk] shipping fry
Shipping fry seems to be one of those practices not "widely
practiced"...taboo maybe? ...I dunno, but the thought keeps crossing my mind
as I loose another 50 austrolebias fry due to over crowding and fear that
over-culling a species with horrible sex ratios might yield too few pairs (I
can't be the only one with that dilemma)
..thing is; some of these huge hatches gobble precious resources, esp. the
deltaense , SJO & fast growing annuals...I don't mind halving the
fundulopanchax and such, cuz you get "reasonable" sex ratio's...but annuals?
ARRRGH.... I think I had to give Keith, Carrol and a few others "BAG-O-Fry"
(with an odd look), or waste em...whadda do?
...and a 9-5 gig means, those 2 feedings a day gets really tiresome
fast...I'm sure I've stunted my share of hatches with the ole single BBS
feeding in the evening...I doubt I'm alone here
And pachypanchax...OMG...slooooowest growing, greediest fry on the
planet...eat non-stop, sex out late, non-alpha males "mimic/cross dress",
and you are left with a tankfull of 1-2" non-sexable juvies after 3mo's
...heck wasn't until I started growing playfari, I was thinking those sach's
were stunts despite the H2O changes & generous heaps of BBS...If there was a
killifish candidate for disposing of/shipping out juvies, this genus is
it....
Ya'll let me know what the "status quo" has ruled on these proceedings, and
I'll abide...otherwise I'll continue suffering the slow & painful learning
curve as I purchase, stunt & kill assorted experimental victims of the
killifish sub-order

The only problem I see with shipping fry is their appetite. They
will not survive as well without food and feeding them during
shipment is likely to fail. Overnight shipments should all do
well. 6 per bag is conservative. joe in Al.
