Re: [Killietalk] Incubation Info needed for austrolebiasGymnoventris

Hi Fred,

How do you prepare your peat moss? Do you boil it before use or just soak
it for a couple of days?

Thanks,
Rich Pierce

Hi Christine, While I respect Roger Langton in every way; I have never
used his peat wetness scale. I also have never looked for an egg in peat.
Even when I didn't physically observe them spawn. I siphon the peat ( I
cover the ENTIRE bottom and then only feed live foods) thru a fine net
and simply squeeze it dry with a good hard squeeze. The eggs are either
in there or not. Upon adding rainwater equivalent, I get a good hatch or
not. If it is too small ( 6 or less), I redry and re incubate ( not GYM
however) in 3 weeks. GYM after going thru the incubator and getting my
first 2 smallish hatches were for the third collection placed on a high
shelf { blue gularis (SJO) and Fp. walkeri (WAL) also}
and a huge hatch ensued after a 2 month dry period. This third
hatch is only about 3 weeks old by the way. What I brought to convention
was only part of the first hatch.
Hope this helps; BTW I use a quality peat moss that even
squeezes different than the average stuff. On the Internet look up MOSSER
LEE and their NODAMPOFF BRAND , horticulturally ,milled, Sphagnum moss.
