Hello,

On the linear pistons.   You may have had too much back pressure on the 
pump.  IT may need to be rebuilt or over hauled.   My LP pump failed at 20 
years old with no service other than changing the air filters.

back pressure is the killer of all pumps.  My pump though back pressure-less 
made this same clatter you describe about a week before it failed 
completely.  FROZE up is a good term.

The LP pumps are still the best of the best.  When it is rebuilt and running 
I strongly suggest making a plenum.  This can be done by feeding the out let 
into a 4-6inch diameter PVC pipe about 20 inches long.  Sealed at both ends 
with end caps and the lines going out to the tanks should be drilled and 
tapped into place.  I typically use barbed adapters and tap the holes and 
use teflon tape to seal them.   The plenum should be within 1 foot of the 
pump.

Do not be afraid to bleed off extra air.   Just enough to keep the pump 
hitting the depths you need.

I also strongly suggest you replace or clean your airstones every 4 months. 
hot Vinegar works well for the glass type airstones but may disintegrate the 
cheapies from WALLY WORLD.

You can by giant diffusers to bleed off air.  attaching one of these along 
with a swing type valve will allow easy regulation of total output through 
the diffuser. JEHMCO has these available for sale.  CHECK IT OUT!  The 
diffuser acts as pressure relief, muffler, and maintains mild back pressure.

You may check on the warranty of your LP pump to see if it is covered most 
of the high end pumps are warranted for many years.

My pump would clang lightly if the INTAKE was obstructed or the air filter 
was LONG overdue for a change.  What you are hearing is the piston NO LONGER 
gliding on a cushion of air but rather smacking into the cylinder walls,  
every minute it runs like that the more damage it is doing.  Just like a 
piston in a car hitting the cylinder walls without oil.  NOT GOOD!
