Hi Peter and Ken,
Not all aphyos are mop spawners. Some are at best reluctant mop spawners.
In general every kathetys I have kept will mop spawn.
The cameronense types for the most part are very reluctant mop spawners only
breeding in mops if there is no other choice. I generally give the CAMs
their options and will find a few in the mop and most in the java moss.
Some locations of Cam I have kept just flat out will not breed in mops.
Herzogi/bochtleri will use mops religiously UNLESS given a choice.
Diapterons in general are reluctant mop spawners and seem to really prefer
java moss or sphagnum to breed in. I really do not prefer to pick eggs on
them rather do the natural method and move the adults. Collected eggs are
not hardy and generally the fry do much better being allowed to develop in
the tank in which they were spawned.
Most Aphyos prefer coarse sphagnum peat but it is nearly impossible to find
the eggs. that is why I recommended that only in natural methods.
It only makes sense really, a mop of acrlic yarn hardly resembles something
they would use in nature. Java moss and sphagnum are really similar to
natural occurring breeding places. Again i prefer the java moss so that I
can collect eggs if I chose to.
OH and KEN, if you decide to take the Ntui down to 60ppm please do so nice
and slow. That softer water would be quite a shock to the system if it was
done too fast. i would start using 60ppm water for all my water changes
until it got down to where you want it. SAY 25% water change with 60ppm
water twice a week for 3 weeks then weekly. Or better yet twice a week
forever. Your elberti will reward your efforts graciously.
Ntui is a great one for natural methods. I always find fry in the tanks
even when I am collecting eggs.
God Bless, Lee Van Hyfte <><
