I suspect he did mean silicone. Interestingly, neither silicone nor
epoxy are particularly soluble in the solvents being discussed.
Water may be best, as it lets one abrade with a nylon scrubber and roll
off and cheaply flush debris away from any thin remaining silicone.
The other solvents (acetone, paint thinner, alcohol) are mostly useful
for degreasing the bond area, which will, maybe, help adhesion if it was
allowed to be contaminated with oil or grease (like fingerprints?).
