Re: [Killietalk] Breeding Elberti was peat storage
I keep doing this (bang bang head)...I hit reply before checking to see if
the "reply to" is the orig poster or the list ...one day I'm gonna slip and
drop a nice 4 letter bomb and blow the entire list up **boom***
Apologies....KC

Thanks Lee...
Keith cook has graciously given me no less than 4 pairs (his thinking being
the pairs are duds)...actually whatever I am doing is a dud...
I'll go with a natural setup on 1pr and mops, moss et with the other (I have
N'tui)...
My water out of the tap is pH 7.1 ppm 140...I have a RO unit, but haven't
needed it thus far (I'll try it at 60ppm or 50/50)
Thanks a bunch...Ken

Hi Ken,
Elberti used to be a real stinker for me back in the late 80's. Since I
went to only modified R.O. i have had no difficulties. My water here is
TOTAL CRAP. If I want to breed anything other than Rift lake fish I HAVE TO
USE R.O.
Best production seems to be around 50ppm (dh3?). I use Kent marines R.O.
right at discus level I use a little tetra Black water extract. Not 100%
sure it makes a difference but I am not about to change while it is still
working. Gotta keep them clean! minimum weekly water changes. I
recommend twice a week for dargei and kekemense. I find that the percentage
of infertile eggs goes up drastically with every 25 ppm. Above 300 and you
will have great difficulty. PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS!
Yellow elberti like it a little warmer. Blues like it cool. KEK like it
quite warm and dargei like it cold. EXI seem not to care at all.
Most elberti are good for natural set ups. Strongly recommended in dargei.
Dargei fry are really delicate and TINY!!
My preference for natural set ups is to allow the parents to breed in the
tank for 4-6 weeks until fry appear then simply move the parents to an
identical set up. HUGE production you will not have but it will still be
better than standard natural and you generally get better sex ratios.
On the set up. I really recommend 1 pair per tank. Extra females typically
hunt for other females' eggs. I do like to place a pairs next to each other
in individual tanks. Gets the males riled up and always good for a show.
Anecdotally speaking I find better production.
The Tanks for mop spawning and collection contain an air stone or the Mini
sponge filters from Azoo. Also contains a good clump of java moss and of
course a mop. Yellow seems to work very well on Ntui for some reason MAYBE
they can't find the eggs. DO NOT forget to check the java moss for eggs. I
often find more eggs in the java moss than in the mops.
On the "natural" method A small handful of Coarse wisconsin sphagnum peat.
lots and lots of Java moss. and a mop for good measure Just so it looks like
a killie tank HA HA! and a mini sponge filter or at a minimum a small
trickle of air through an airstone. I typically add in some ramshorn snails
too. These are great at eating detritus and un eaten BBS. NOT POND SNAILS.
the little ramshorns are excellent at leaving eggs alone!
The adults are fed BBS daily, a constant supply of LBW, occasionally
daphnia, Mosquito larvae, and THEY LOVE FRUIT FLIES!!!
Most elberti are big enough to feed on Fresh BBS. Dargei are not. I
recommend microworms, infusorians, or better yet "dirty" java moss.
I hope this helps. Essentially soft water and frequent changes.
God Bless, Lee Van hyfte ><>
