Re: [Killietalk] Long Incubation Period
Hey Larry,
Generally speaking most aphyos will not tolerate 6 weeks damp. One
exception being Joergenscheeli which I have had go as long as 10 weeks
before they were even ready to hatch. If you can get the eggs towards 65F
that will slow things up a bit. 6 weeks is pushing it though.
I would personally place 2 dozen eggs in a 5.5 gallon full of java moss.
Throw in a few daphnia and hope for the best. (I do mean a few daphnia) We
are trying to culture fish not daphnia. There should be enough critters on
the "dirty" java moss to provide food for the youngsters.
Definition of dirty. UNRinsed pulled from an older healthy maybe slightly
over fed tank.
To be honest I get some of my best results with my annuals using "dirty"
java moss as a first food. Imagine it as a micro-organism cupboard.
Make sure you have a small trickle of air running and that is it.
The daphnia you placed in there will also feed and hopefully reproduce a
little, supplying your baby fish with a next size up meal with their
nauplii.
The java moss also acts as a biofilter having live bacteria EVERYWHERE on
it. it also uses up what little nitrate and such there is in such a small
bio load. I strongly suggest that you try to place the eggs into/on the
java moss to keep them off the bottom of the tank.
I am willing to bet you come back home to some nice healthy fry! It really
is not all that different than a natural breeding method!
Oh and the 5 gallon tank should be filled with tank water at least 50% of
the total water. Less upset for the micros.
For the record. I had a tank of A. dargei that I lost my adults in. Just
left it sitting there full of java moss have not fed the tank for about 5
months. i went to tear the tank down and found a 2 "baby" dargei about 1/2
inch long. All they have been eating was what was alive in the java moss
in a 2.5 gal tank. Sponge filter was running and ZERO water changes. 2
fish isn't that many but it is a heck of a lot more than I expected.
god Bless, Lee <><
