pre-drill your holes.....no splitting then.   i would also recommend
using something bigger then 1x2 material..    real 2x4 are actually
planed down to 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 size.    much stronger and safer, less
likelyhood of an accidental breakage

but just my opinion and experience building racks for my tanks..
