Re: [Killietalk] single 4ft lighting?(new subject - less lightingand plants)

Thanks for the advise/tips...funny, the "dead/placebo" bulb trick was so
obvious, it never even occurred to me...
I wonder what the "Electrical" requirement is tho?...I thought the
"potential" is across the pins, not across the length of the bulb...I wonder
if there some way to rewire the ballast for single bulb...they only show the
two bulb schematic on the ballast

Ditto on the java(s)...
...you can also get hornwort to adapt to a single bulb...it's tricky tho at
1st, esp. dodging the algae thing...seems it takes a few intermediate H2O
changes before its sucking nitrogen faster than the algae...once adapted
however it will indeed grow into a attractive light green delicate "open"
looking form...quite pretty really...

water sprite behaves similarly (I can tell when it has adapted to lower
light when the pinnate behavior of the leaf never deviates from the juvenile
format)...problem is under a single bulb: it does not suck nitrogen all that
fast...you get algae amongst it (or I can't figure out how to combat algae
using a single bulb)...I got java moss underneath in some tanks, but the
dangling sprite roots and java moss ain't a pretty mix

I got Amazon swords, and jungle val adapted to a single bulb also...problem
being they are able to do so by sending the leaves right up to the surface,
thereby shading everything underneath...

I do know this much: better single bulb performance is had using those
affordable "full spectrum" T-8's...I like that Phillips brand 32W for $5...
The cool white Alto's are not bad lumens wise, but make algae management
tricky if used alone...(these are under "Perfecto" hoods, et)

I also realize the "Java(s)" are almost a must under single bulbs,
regardless of primary plant species...basically

Hi all, I'd like to do the same in regard to less lighting, but how will
the
live plants survive with such low lighting. Thanks. Ed Brandt
