Re: [Killietalk] Stubborn Dolichopterus eggs
Hold on a second, Lee, is there any air in the jar at all, or is it
completely filled with liquid? I was picturing a half liquid half air sorta
thing. I suppose that if the jar was full to the brim, and the lid was on
very loose with the sole function of keeping the peat from escaping, loose
enough that there could be an ever so slight exchange of liquid, I will
agree that pressure inside of the jar does indeed reflect the pressure of
the surroundings. But if there's air....that is a horse of another color.

Ah but the jar has the lid on loosly and therefor the contents are effected
by the pressure change.

That is because the eardrum is somewhat flexible, unlike the jar.

I have no doubt you are correct. But I have also noticed when I go diving,
that within a few feet under the water, my ears need to start being
equalized due to pressure.

But if the gas does not change in volume, and it does not do so in a rigid
container, its pressure can not change at a fixed temperature. Boyle's Law.
Pressure is transmitted through fluids, but if the water can't get into the
jar and the gas isn't coming out, the fluids must not be in direct contact,
therefore no transmition. There must be something else going on. Agitation
of putting the eggs in the jar, temperature, CO2 build-up in a closed
container...something. But I'm certain it isn't pressure.

I have used the deep tank in a jar method and it does seem to work for eggs
that are ready to hatch. It doesn't work on eggs not ready to hatch --
fortunately. Pressure is transmitted through fluids - liquid or gas if there
is an
opening. Water does not have to leak in. Why it works - I don't know. My
only
complaint about it (besides the wet arm I get fishing them out) is the newly
hatched fry are hard to see in a deep layer of peat. I pour them out if I
see any
fry and after a few hours in any case into a white tray.
