[Killietalk] pupfish problems
I agree completely with Dave Koran. We think of pupfish as euryhaline, but,
inevitably, I've encountred problems trying to maintain any of them in
freshwater, even if I've acclimated them from either marine or desert
conditons, over a long period of time.
I had good success with both the coastal and desert species by using MARINE
salts, not just sodium chloride. I regularly keep variegatus and its relatives
in full sea water (general salinity, 1.030). I haven't kept macularius or
nevadensis in some years, but I've had them in 10% seawater (made in in Ann
Arbor tapwater) doing well. If you want to use a freshwater environment, there
are published analyses of waters in Death Valley and other isolated desert pools
(I don't have these in front of me at the moment) I would pay careful attention
to the magnesium content as well as the calcium hardness.
