Re: [Killietalk] Blue gularis ARRRRGH

Hi Ken,
Now you have found out why they are nasty bad tempered sods, it`s the LAST thing that is done after separating them is to put them all back together. If your lucky you may finish with one out of a tank full , looks like you found this out the hard way, most of their related species are the same. Big bad tempered and ugly but I still keep them.

This is easily the most frustrating killie...
I isolated 3 nice 1" fry in the hopes they might be males and I could get
some nice finnage for a shot at a "Show specimen"
...turns out they were just fast growing girls, so I placed the now 3" fish
back with the original group...my thinking being, they should hold their own
since these fish were slightly larger and sturdier after being pampered in
isolation

Big mistake!!! I witnessed the oddest behavior I had ever seen in a group of
fish...the entire group descended upon the newcomers like a pack of
piranhas...it was an odd site watching 10 fish coordinating their attack
upon one "new" fish after the other...

I fed the tank daphnia figuring the live food would offer a distraction, but
no...I come back 30 minutes later only to find 3 "skulls", no bodies, and a
tank full of fat gularis

Now I have witness a small "disturbance" in some other types of
fundulopanchax when you remove a pair or so...and I have seen "non-related"
males squabble...but I never imagined a group of fish could immediately spot
a newcomer so quickly, let alone proceed to single-mindedly disembowel them
with such "purpose"....this was darn odd, darn odd

BTW, anyone interested, I have a couple pairs available ...this
is a pretty decent looking (but aggressive) strain if I say so myself

KC
