Re: [Killietalk] response to response to response to response

Mike if you sent me a email telling me the fish arrived and I missed it,
Well I won't question that, apologize for my error, and reply (albeit VERY
late) "You are welcome"...
I was more concerned with the fate than any protocol, stroking et...and BTW,
apparently about 6-8 people had the same luck you had

I'm gonna summarize and condense what you are saying into this universally
agreed solution:
Volunteer & contribute

I'm doing what I can besides paying lip service, but tootin ones horn is
tacky...We'll keep moving fwd...And find a beneficial common
ground...somehow....
Later...Ken

Subject: [Killietalk] response to response to response to response

Ken and Kevin

Ohhhhhh, let's see, where do I start.

Ken . . . I specifically remember thanking you and "kissing all over you"
about the Quiii eggs as I was one of the first 2-3 people in this country to
have had those fish in my tanks despite the people in the AKA that I went to
with pictures and told them it was a new fish and their response was
something like . . . "no way, Mike Jacobs couldn't possibly have a NEW
SPECIES fish I haven't had yet!" So, that fish was very dear to me and I
very much told you how much I appreciated the gift of the Quiii eggs. I
tried my best to get a hatch but after 4-5 wettings and numerous attempts to
find eggs it was all to no avail. Incidentally, remember some of those AKA
members who you think I am backing blindly were the very people that at that
time treated me as though I had Aids.

Secondly, Ken, you forgot a few things in your description of me. . . I am
1) fat 2) ugly 3) comb my hair funny 4) my mother dresses me funny and
5) I like red pop and of course you are none of those.

As long as we are self anointing you could start giving away fish today and
spend the next 5 years doing such and you probably wouldn't catch up to me
but it was, without question, a tremendously nice gesture on your part and
the eggs were received and talked about at our club meetings by me in your
regard on more than one occasion.

Now, to the general intent of my previous note and all of the responses. In
one form or another, issues like this have come up every time there is an
attempt by the AKA to advance forward the AKA's position in the
effectiveness of e-mail, F&EL, JAKA, Web Sites. Just as soon as some
volunteers their time to accomplish something there are people who would
have done it differently and who don't understand why their methods or ideas
aren't integrated into the present AKA process for what ever they are
talking about at the moment. This time the F&EL ran into a snag. I really
don't know what the snag was to be honestly. All I saw were 2-3-4 people on
Killitalk telling the volunteers in AKA that they were not doing it
correctly and stories as to their wisdom were put on the Killitalk. Quite
frankly that bothers the hell out of me. Please don't misunderstand me, as
most of you have, I am for change. Most of the time I am for BIG change. I
stood up in the BOT meeting in Syracuse, NY in . . . ohhhhh, I think it was
1998-97, somewhere about then and gave my views about the coming of e-mail
and web sites EVEREYTHING computer. I was on every side, and still am, on
computer and e-mail and how it will help the AKA or whatever organization
with which you are acquainted. After I stood up in that BOT meeting and
said my 3 minute mouthful I could feel the silence behind me and I was
afraid to turn around as I was sure there was 100 rifles pointed right at my
heart . . . it was not the popular attitude then I was effectively
committing suicide at that moment. I went up to my room and spent the next 2
hours trying to figure out what was wrong with what I had just done. It was
very simple .. . I was a new comer to this AKA group and they 1) didn't know
me 2) they didn't know as much about computers as I did 3) 70+% of them
didn't have computers and 90% of them swore they would never have one of
those contraptions 4) It was their club and I was a new comer and should,
quite frankly get to know and contribute some volunteer some time, energy
and experience to their club before I insisted on anything . . . Mind you I
was correct! You and all of those people that leveled their eye's at my
heart that day, if they even remember (I do!!!!!!!), will tell you I was
right but clubs and people do not move quickly and to expect so is, in my
opinion is silly!

Now, Ken & Kevin, this is not Microsoft or IBM, or Ford or any other big
company you want to insert into those spots . . . people get paid to move
quickly! They get paid a lot of money to think and move the company
quickly! The AKA volunteers are paid nothing and it is my feeling is that
Killitalk should have a minimum of talk about negative political ideas when
it simply knocks the people involved. I did not say political talk should
be eliminated as both of you interpreted, I think, but all of this F&EL is
really, as was mentioned by some, a Katrina in a teapot . . . my version. I
am 100% sure that the volunteers in the F&EL will get the glitches out of
the system. I have NO DOUBTS about that! Yet all I have been reading for
the last 3-4-5 days is the B&EL and the PROBLEMS and how "If it were me I
would . . . XYZABC!" Then make it you or relax and see if the volunteers
straighten this all out. I see a simple fix to it all too but why would I
go on Killitalk and indicate there are better ways and give the impression
that everyone is screwing up and all needs to be changed. You can deny my
last sentence if you wish but I have talked . . . on the personally . . . by
mouth . . . the old fashion way . . . with some people in the AKA thay
believe that way I do but won't speak up.

Do you really, really think that Barry and Tom and whomever else is involved
in the B&LE really want to favor a few over another bunch? Do you really
believe that? If not the e-mail them personally and offer to help them fix
the situation . . . don't bad-mouth volunteers on Killitalk and expect them
to react . . . jump.

I have been the past president of the Tampa Bay Aquarium Society for years
(3 I think) . . . and v-president for several other years (2 I think) and
the BOD for several other years (3-4 I think) and the web master for 4-5-6
years (not the last 3-4 years) www.tbas1.com <http://www.tbas1.com/> and
editor of the newsletter for the last . . . ohhhhhh let me think, 10-11
years . . . that was not a slip . . . 10-11 years . . . every month with no
months off for the summer. I was president and v-president and all of those
things and web master and bulletin editor all at the same time. I am
presently, at the same time as editor of the TBAS bulletin the president of
the Coastal Aquarium Society and web master of their web site . . .
www.coastalaquariumsociety.com <http://www.coastalaquariumsociety.com/> .
I have taken part in putting on the AKA convention in 2000 and 20006 . . .
the computers and the AKA Convention Bulletin. And by the way the web site
of the SKS is mine . . . www.sks.aka.org <http://www.sks.aka.org/> . In
addition I work 40 hours a week at a 37 year job. I say this garbage NOT to
get applause or anything of the sort but just to indicate to you the reason
for my overall dislike of people who want things changed but don't want to
do or help or volunteer or get elected. The only thing that moves is their
mind and their mouth and their fingers on the computer. Some . . . no, most
of the ides you folks come up with are very valid and good and have more
than some merit! Fine, but your method of presenting your ideas are simply
go to Killitalk and tell people and expect change. I think that is what I
call indicative of the "electron generation" . . . of which you can now see
that I am actually a part of despite my aging fat, ugly 61 year old body!

Lastly I would like to tell you a short story from the 2006 AKA Convention
in Tampa, Fl. I was at the computer (where else) and someone came up with a
bag of fish in their hand and had a problem with something about the name of
a fish either being auctioned or in the Saturday sale or something . . .
anyway, the person said the fish was possibly miss-named. I apologized a
bunch and took the fish and assured them I would make every attempt to get
it correct. The response was "Well, you guys need to be more careful at
conventions like this one!" I looked the person in the eye directly and
sternly and said well, you know not everyone in our club knows all of the
fish in the world of killifish. The response was "Well, if I were in charge
I wouldn't put anyone in charge of anything if they didn't know what they
were doing!" I asked the person if they had ever put on an AKA Convention"
. . . the response was, I swear to GOD . . . "NO, too much work!" I
promptly told the person to go to hell!" I suspect I lost a friend! True
story.

I am for everything new for clubs, I am for listening to everyone about
everything but yes . . . I volunteer groups . . . you cannot expect people
to react like they probably should at Microsoft, or IBM or now APPLE . . .
:-)! Ken . . . Kevin . . . are you changing to APPLE??? I think you
better! Just an opinion . . . might be the way of the future you know . . .
you don't want to be caught with your shorts down!

You all need you re-read me and try to re-understand me. Or, I guess just
blow me off! That might be best after all.

Sorry for the verbosity folks . . . I will climb down now!

Mike
