Re: [Killietalk] response to Mike Jacobs response to change
Mike,
I appreciate your expressing your point of view. Thank
you.
I suppose being 48 I am one of the "electron
generation" that
you refer to. Like others here I obtained my first
killies
online, my first few purchases were on Ebay. I then
became
addicted to Aquabid.
The first time I saw killies offered at my local fish
store,
(I won't use online jargon like LFS so that I do not
offend)
was when I worked at Greenwoods in Warren, Michigan
way back
in the 70's. Art Titus used to come in and stock the
tanks,
although I think mainly he just sorted out the females
that
had jumped the dividers. I don't remember netting too
many
killies for anyone.
When I decided to keep killies I joined the AKA, MKA,
BKA and
support those organizations with my dues. I also
belong to
the ACA and the IAA as well as several online groups
at Yahoo
I don't think that belonging entitles me to anything
other
than access to information and a shot at buying fish
on the
lists at these clubs. so your comment
"they REALLY think that ANY club they join is suppose
to jump
and do EVERYTHING they can possibly think of!"
doesn't really apply to everyone, I suppose you are
really
refering to members you have some history with.
I also hoped that belonging to these clubs would help
me
enter a circle of aquaintances that may help me learn
how
to keep killies successfully. I have met few fellow
hobbyists
in person as I still work for a living and the local
club
meetings are tailored to people who work a 9 to 5-ish
schedule.
I ignored the winter storm warnings and drove from
Detroit
to Elkhart, IN to attend the Michiana Killie Karnival.
A really
great experience and as time permits I will attend
other events.
The bulk of the advice I have found on killies has
been from
people online, and from online databases like
killietalk.
I have to say I was very disappointed to see posts
from people
who have been in the hobby for years telling new
comers to
"stay at the shallow end of the pool".
here was my favorite reply to a guy who had the
audacity to ask,
"Has anyone tried this...?"
"That's funny because Mr. (insert respected important
name here) has
been doing and preaching that for 25 years that I
know of ! I consider
him a friend and mentor. I'm sure I am not alone in
that respect. Sure
beats the jibberish/ramblings/musings and outright
nonsense posted to
Killietalk. I know of at least two other serious
hobbyists who won't
even monitor Killietalk because they have similar
feelings."
HOHOHOHAHAHAHA... whew! you sure put him in his place!
I'll bet
he thinks twice before asking anything on killietalk
again!
I know I did.
As Homer Simpson once said,
"Trying is the first step toward failing."
The moral here, "Don't try"
I would hope that as mature adults and experienced
killie keepers,
when you see me offering something here that seems off
to you,
you would offer kind advice rather than hitting me on
the nose
with a rolled up newspaper.
I can offer something to you in my capacity as a
member of the
"electron generation", Mike.
I realize that you are not angry,
"By the way . . . I am not angry . . . I just really
don't understand!"
and I believe that your capitalizing certain words was
for emphasis,
but here, in the online world...
"PLEASE EXPLAIN THAT IN A REASONABLE TONE TO ME!"
this is known as shouting.
I realize that writing here and potentially
annoying/boring
people will exclude me from certain cliques and
sources of
killies, but I'm okay with that. That's one of the
reasons
I haven't name dropped any of the people I've met
either
personally or electronically, I'd hate to stain their
reputations.
I can still get information from Killietalk whether I
am a
member or not, and there always Aquabid.
At least until I complete my twelve step program.
