Re: [Killietalk] Canadian Killie Keeper
I suppose an AKA list discussion of the state of the Canadian killie hobby
may seem narrow, but I think our problems are instructive. The founders of
the AKA were brilliant in their choice of structure - with representation
from specific areas and their attempts at a moving convention. I realize
there are west coast/east coast issues, but the basic structure is sound.
In Canada, the CKA is apparently gone. At the outset, many members came in
from across the country, but most soon left as all meetings were in homes in
Toronto or the surrounding area. The conventions were also in the same
region. It was a good try by great people, but it was never a national
structure.
We now have a regional club situation. Vancouver is an AKA affiliate. I've
been contacted by two Toronto region clubs. There seem to be a number of
killiekepers scattered through the prairies. Where I am, we have North
America's largest French language killie club (okay, only French language
club), Killi-Quebec, doing very well after several years of operation. We
tried to become an AKA affiliate but no one answered the e-mails and we just
got on with it ;-)
Why would Canadian clubs join the AKA? We can play word games and say
"American" is of the Americas, and not just of that small part of the two
continents that is the USA. But really, the AKA has a focussed structure
that is sufficiently decentralized. It's a welcoming, friendly group that
allows us to keep in touch with like minded killiekeepers (as long as we
don't discuss politics). It's not perfect for getting fish, but for the
exchange of information, networking and the possibility of discussion, it's
great.
