I've no doubt you are going to get bombarded with replies on this.

Their are supposedly reports which state peat gives off a hormone to promote 
spawning in killies. I have never seen any paper on this to support the 
point. It would be convenient to illustrate your point above. Personally I 
don't subscribe to this.

Scheel regularly re-used peat with the addition of a small amount of sugar & 
still bred lots of killies so I guess this is something of a wrench in the 
works. You might like to try this out for yourself but be aware that this is 
fuel for bacteria to grow in.

Their are a lot of parameters to take into consideration which are not 
mentioned. For instance, how often were water changes done? If the sjo's 
were getting older they would lay more infertile eggs etc.
