I have never visited or sampled Nothobranchius habitats, but I have done some
sampling in Uruguay in seasonal pools. The water quality was always high
until the last few days of the drying stage. The water is kept free of nitrogen
products like ammonia, nitrates, nitrites by a considerable amount of thriving
vegetation and vegetative decomposition. I never found any detectable ammonia,
nitrites or nitrates but the TDS did increase somewhat toward the dried up
stage, although still low by any standard. The pH stayed pretty close to neutral.
