Re: [Killietalk] Tank Heating

Aaron, is the heating element in the Honeywell HZ-2300 Compact Heater exposed? Notice that Bob has an oil filled radiant heater. I also have one, rather old now, in the fish room. The heating element is in that oil chamber. While I'm sure accidents could still happen, a number of electric heaters, especially the old fashioned ones which still start several tragic fires in the Chicago area every winter, are much more open to a water splash than are those with the heating element encased within that tank or chamber. While I'm no where near as coordinated as you, I'm amazed at how my water slops, spills and splashes have found different spots in the fishroom. Water has landed on that heater. No whistle, no shock, no foul.

My radiant heater doesn't have a fan and I have sometimes place a small fan on the floor in a corner (speaking of electrical things in harms way) and aim it across the room towards the ceiling to circulate the air. Imagine a couple small fans mounted near the ceiling would do the trick more effectively.

Have heard of one "closet fish room" which had a computer fan mounted by the ceiling and it kept the closet at about the same temperature top to bottom. I think the heat source was an incandescent bulb on a thermostat.

All the best!
Scott

8X12 and I use a Honeywell oil filled radiator type heater. I couldn't find
the model number on mine but it sold for about $60. It has the digital
temperature on it.

My fish room is unheated by the rest of the house and has two windows in it.
I set the thermostat at 80 but with the cold weather we are having it stays
at 70 at the level of the heater and the upper tanks in the room are staying
close to 80. In my opinion it does a very good job.

If you were to use heaters in your tanks you would need about 12. Total
wattage of somewhere round 800 watts total. The heater is a 1500 watt heater
but should work out well in the room.

Hope this helps
