Re: [Killietalk] Pump for recirculation system

Dear FishFolk,

<<>However, the Tulsa water is fairly hard 80 - 120 ppm.>

I should have said that the water is 80 - >200 ppm and fluctuates. One LFS
owner said it gets >300 ppm depending on time of year. We are in the middle
of a multiyear drought and it's pretty hard right now.

There are fish that will not produce viable eggs in this water. The adults
survive pretty well but I have at least 6 species that I've had to go to
softer water to get eggs that would hatch. I already use tap water with the
nothos, which are my favourite fish.

I am currently thinking of a flow through system for the nothos and most of
the other fish that will do fine in tapwater and a flow through system of
softwater for the others.

I can see the plumbing in my head but I need to buy a lot more valves.

Thanks,

Earl

For some of my fish I cut it 50% with DI water and I also like to have salt
>in my water. I keep nothos and I like the longevity it gives to bbs.

Earl,
I would say that 80-120ppm is fairly soft, and non-problematic for many of
the fish in the hobby. Since you mention keeping Nothos, I will pose the
question of why bother using RO at all? I keep Nothos, Austrolebias and
Fundulopanchax with no problems (so far) in 470 ppm water. If you're
keeping Nothos and some softwater species, I would probably set up 2
systems. One soft water and one hard water. Actually intend to do this
myself at some point so I can keep some of the soft water species that I
like. I must be the only WAKO member without an Aphyosemion of some sort.
