Exactly my practice. I have a couple tanks to which I manually add rain water
or RO water, depending on the rainfall. The gradual mixing seems to not be
important. I now just dump a couple quarts of rain water in when I think of it
or I test the TDS. The fish seem to like the stimulus of a sudden rain water
event. That's what happens in nature. I do not replace more than 1/3 of the tank
water with rain water. If I am doing a more major change, I premix the rain
and dechlorinated tap water. Actually, as time goes by (8 years now), even
Maratecoara lacortei do not seem to need as soft water as when they were newly
derived from wild fish.
