Thanks all for the advice . . . it seems I have a worst case scenario here. 
Beams are 2x10, 16" apart, spans are 12 feet, and all available spots would 
place the tank running along one beam (or two with any luck and precise 
measurements) right in the middle of the beam. For a 40G tank and stand, 
that works out to around 400 lb, which I am not confortable with. Seems like 
any larger tank must go to the basement.
