Re: [Killietalk] A. hera variability

Hi Allan,
Yes, I'd have to say you have two different locations. The first, without the spots, looks like Lambarene or the "yellow form" (see this site http://www.killifish.f9.co.uk/Killifish/Killifish%20Website/Ref_Library/Aphyosemion/A.hera.htm) and the other could be any of several strains.
There are at least four strains I know of in the hobby. TDK 97-29, TDK 97-30, ARK 96 1-2, and an aquarium strain (see a recent BNL listing by Sue Katz for the last one). I have a male 97-29, and I don't think I have any young left, so I guess I don't have a pair. I hope Scott Davis still has this strain going. Another local friend does have a pair+ 6 or so males (I have him a dozen eggs, and for a while he had 11 males and 1 female).
  Hope this helps,
  Gary

Recently I received some Aphyosemion hera from at least different sources.
I noticed some distinct color differences, particularly in the anal fin.
The predominant pattern (perhaps because most of the males came from one
source) show a reddish line running across the top of the fin paralleling
the body with the rest of the fin a yellow color. The variation also has
the reddish line but also has red spots in the anal fin and the base color
of the fin is blue. Is this a natural variation for a locale - or does it
indicate that I have several different populations? As far as I know, there
are only two populations in the hobby (at least in the US).
