[Killietalk] Disappearing killi eggs [was RE: Diapteron, australe, etc.]

Hi Lee,

My experience regarding eggs disappearing during incubation has been very dependent on the genus. I always have good viability with Simp, Gnatholebias, Aphyolebias(90% or more), average viability with Terranatos (50%-60%), and awfull viability with Campellolebias (10% or less).

Just a note on my peatmoss, I used Canadian Sphagnum Peatmoss that has been soaked in boiling water. The water subsequently used for water changes, and the peatmoss was never rinced of anything.

take care,

I just wanted to stimulate some discussion on killietalk about my hatching
techniques that seem to be working for all species of non-annual killifish,
especially useful for Diapteron cyanostictum and Aphyosemion australe.
This is essentially the basic steps. I collect the eggs about every third
day by picking from the mops and placing in room temperature tap water that
has been freshly drawn from the tap and contains chlorine/chloramine about 1-2
ppm. I store them in 12 oz deli cups about one inch deep for 2-4 days and then
pour off most of the water and replace it with dechlorinated (by carbon
filtration) tap water. I use no other fungicide. In another week or more the eggs
hatch and are transferred to a one gallon shoe box with some micro worms
(Walter) and a portion of Java Moss and automatic water replacement. By this method
I get better hatches and eliminate the destruction of fertile eggs by egg
eating wormâ??like critters. Of course, infertile eggs still fungus but the fungus
does not spread to fertile eggs. It has been suggested that I try this with
annual eggs by rinsing the freshly collected eggs in tap water, but I suspect it
may take longer to kill the little worms. I plan on running some experiments
where I store the collected peat in tap water for a few days before drying and
storing in the incubator. I will try it first on Simpsonichthys marginatus
where I am getting eggs that disappear during storage in peat.
