Re: [Killietalk] Carelessness with email addresses?
For the record, yes, the email addresses are available via the online
roster just as they are in the paper roster. I want to assure you all
that the addresses are not stored on the server in an open way. They are
in a database which is not harvestable by bots. Only AKA members who are
logged on as such can access the online roster.
Also for the record, there are mechanisms to send email messages to
multiple recipients without listing the addresses openly. We do this
rarely, because we feel most members don't welcome a lot of bulk email.
We have, for example, used it to remind members to vote. When we did
that, each member got an individual email message.
My point here is that you are not exposed to spam by having your email
address in your profile on the server. I feel it is important to be able
to contact other members, and the most common way to do that these days
is via email.
