Re: [Killietalk] java moss

I grow Java Moss in most of my tanks. I have two that it does very well in. They are thirty gallons tanks on the same stand in a south Window. They received direct light at least eight hours a day. They are not algae problems for two reason. I have bristle nose plecoes in both tanks and Endler's livebearers. The plecoes keep the glass clean and endler's eat any algae growing on the moss. You can tell if the environment is correct for Java Moss because it will sprout side shoots like a christmas tree branch. If you have a reasonable number of fish you will have both a CO2 source and ammonia or nitrate for the rapid growth. I think it does better in hard water but will adapt to most. I don't think it is heat sensitive. I am located in Louisiana neat Baton Rouge. Last year after both Katrina and Rita the power was out so no air conditioner. The temperature inside the trailer was over one hundred. The Java Moss just grow rapidly. I don't think the temperature cooled mu!
ch at night. I did have some die recently. The light burned out a ten gallon tank. I have spend the money to get another light fixture for a ten gallon tank. The Java Moss turned brown in a few weeks even enought it is sitting next to a tank with light. I think people underestimated the amount of light this plant needs. In low light it might survive but it does not grow fast. There is always demand for Java Moss. It really sells well at aquabid and eBay. I wish I had the room to grow hundreds of pounds of the stuff. I feel I could really sell it all.

Just my 2 cents,
Scott
