>I have grown Java Moss in both soft and hard water. It does seem to
grow better for me in water that is slightly alkaline. Best growth i
had was in a 55 gallon tank set up for some Xiphophorus Nezzies...
I throw my Java moss, salvinia & duckweed in the compost bin. It grows so
fast it overtakes the tanks. My water is pH 8, DH 10 carbon hardness 10. I
use soft water as de-mineralised or de-humidified water & it still grows
crazy. The common factor is light. Natural daylight through a clear roof.
Old water, new water makes no difference to it's growth rate. I just today
cleaned out an old vat which has been in need of cleaning out for months. It
had a thick layer of salvinia. I took out of this vat 3 full sized
Ancistrus, a Nigerian crayfish thing & about 40 severum of about 3". These
being the fairly new heckle face variety with the deep orange anal fin. Also
I took masses of Java moss out all very healthy. This vat was basically in
the dark for months.
Xiphophorus nezahualcoyotl you mention is every auctioneers nightmare. I
have auctioned these but took some time to practice the name. I've grown
these boys on in my tapwater (above measurements). Again the moss grew well.
I sell the stuff to people selling coconut caves on auction sites to help
with the fuel bills. Electric & Gas prices in the UK are getting silly
money.
