It grows in all but the following conditions for me
1. Acid water (below 5.0) -- it turns brown and dies
2. Warm water (above 80 degrees F) it turns to mush and dies
    It grows really well under really cool conditions (below 50 degrees F) 
and seems to grow by itself without fish. Pond snails and Java Moss coexist 
really well and provide my favorite environment for raising small fry.
    On the other hand trying to grow it faster with more light doesn't seem 
to work.
