Re: [Killietalk] space and growth - interesting paradox
All his energy goes to growing rather than breeding and fighting.

I have an interesting issue that has come up recently. In late June, Trevor
Meyer hatched out 30 F. occidentalis fry from peat I received from Gordon
Zahn. I took five of the fry, to males and three females, and Trevor kept the
rest. I placed mine in a ten gallon tank and fed them on baby brine,
cyclopeez, and frozen and freeze dried blood worms. One male seemed to grow faster
than the others, and became aggressive with the other male, so I took the
aggressive fish out and placed him in a two gallon critter keeper by himself.
The fish in my 2 gallon tanks receive baby brine, Cyclopeez and, every second
day, grindel worms. Fish in the tens receive frozen blood worms, freeze
dried blood worms, freeze dried krill and baby brine, all once a day, as well as
the grindels every second day. At this writing, the
F. occidentalis in the 10 are about 2 inches, full bodied and healthy. I
saw Trevor's fish, which are in a 75, and they are the same size. I checked
the one male in the 2 gallon critter keeper the other day, and he is three
inches long and much fuller bodied than all of the others! He is halfway to adult
size! I am wondering if anyone knows what could account for this difference.
