Re: [Killietalk] Annual Fundulopanchax

Hi Keith et all

First off : Schwoiseri what's that?
Answer: Briefly it was Fallax from malende
Schwoiseri, fallax, and kribianus were different species back in the 60's through early 90's fallax and kribianus remain synonymous. Schwoiseri has been re-erected to species status.

All in all, it is a MUTE point as it is EXTINCT in the hobby and Wild. Robertsoni was from the same location but by good grace it was saved from extinction by captive propogation.

Back to Fallax. 1 yr is an OLD fallax your saving grace may be those cool temps. I keep them about 68-70 myself. I have also seen the belly slider effect and even seen it reverse once the stress of the aggressive male is removed. Stress induce bladder loss. SEEN IT FIRST HAND. pollution can do it too. Age unfortunately is the MOST likely culperate.

Just because they do not swim right does not mean they cannot breed.

Generally I begin breeding fallax at 4 months- 9months and they really start to kick out the infertile eggs at 10 mos. Like I said 65F may have extended that period. Sjoestedti are pretty much the same way. as are gularis and deltaense. Although I think deltaense are the worst for age vs fertility.

i have been doing a lot of breeding over Black silica sand. Essentially NO buffering action, BUT DO NOT FORGET THE Tetra Black water extract (i use 2x the dose) if you breed in clear water and clean you will find a lot of DEAD EGGS!! The silica needs to merely stirred up and then a regular green net swept through the tank to collect these BIG eggs. totally different story with the filamentosum allies and their MICRO eggs.

I cannot stress enough what Charles said about feed quality especially in the BIG Fp's. DIRECT correlation between quality of feed and fertility!! also Fecundity!!

Here is my suggestion DO NOT GIVE UP ON THEM YET. However if the opportunity presents itself to get fresh stock DO IT!! You have a much better arsenal now with the Knowledge we have all shared. You can beat them!! THEY ARE SUCH A GREAT FISH!!!!

For those that do sell fish do NOT be afraid to take 5 minutes out of your day to give the buyer an info sheet. Something like that could have saved Keith a years worth of frustration in breeding fallax. 3 paragraphs is NOT all that much and just leads to feeding the Killie addiction!!!!!!

God Bless, Lee "the Rivnut" <><
