Re: [Killietalk] Annual Fundulopanchax
My original question on the "annualness" of Fp (thanks for the nomenclature
lesson!) was sparked by the article on Fp. rubrolabialis (please forgive
lack of italics) written by Tony Terceira in the Sept/Oct 2005 JAKA. In
this article he clearly chose the word "annual" versus the term
"semi-annual" (which me-thinks refers to an ability to undergo an extended
period of perhaps 8 wks in peat) which we commonly use to describe Fp. By
choosing the word "annual" I was presuming that he meant that the fish
typically lives a year or so in the wild and continues to do so in captivity
much as the Nothos do, even though we all have had or have heard of that 2
yr old Notho I don't think that is the rule. Am I right in my
interpretation of the discussion that this has not been anyone's direct
experience with any Fp.?
This leads me to ask a more direct fallax question. My females, not the
male, have somewhat recently started to lie around on the bottom almost like
at 1 year they have decided to become belly sliders. I was thinking this
might be because they are physiologically spent from egg production and are
just declining. Then I saw the article and thought "oh, maybe they are
annuals, too." This seems not to be the case. Do you think if I separate
them that the females will recharge and recover? I also thought it might be
the 66F temps that have beset them this fall, but I've added a heater, and
at 72F I'm not seeing any change. Help??!
