Re: [Killietalk] Annual Fundulopanchax

Hi Keith and all,

How about we call it annualistic. HE HE

Gardneri, spoorenbergi, sp. Korup National Park, nigerianus, mamfensis,
scheeli, oeseri, marmoratus, all do best in water.

By the way Korup national park does better with water incubation. Anyone
got any so I can prove it AGAIN!! I was begged out of all that I had which
were later killed by the BEGGER!!

Amieti, puerzli, greseni, mirabilis it is 50/50 pick your poison. I
personally prefer water as it is easier, but either dry or wet give you
great results.

Robertsoni, rubrolabiale, avichang, arnoldi, filamentosum require a dry
time. Really no option if you expect a hatch. You can play with them all
you want but just "dry" them out and you will save a lot of unnessary
headache.

others such as fallax, schwoiseri, gularis, deltaense, sjoestedti, ndianus
prefer a "dry" time but it is not mandatory. It is mandatory if you want
serious numbers however. Water incubation in these species is not
generally the best mode. 4-8 weeks very damp is best dependant on temp and
species.

Fp. Powelli SOME ONE HAS GOT TO COLLECT THAT FISH SO WE CAN FIGURE THAT ONE
OUT TOO!!.

NOTE!!!! I have seen Fp. avichang showing NO development at 3 months in
water. So i think that would probably qualify as a diapause of some sort.
Put them into peat and they eyed up and hatched 2 weeks later. HMMMMM
Even I was shocked by that one.

Species formerly in Fp. Callopanchax toddi, huwaldi, and occidentalis,
monroviae are also mandatory dry fish. Especially OCC and TOD which often
take 6-8 months incubation.

The batesii. I think they are in Aphyosemion again this week. formerly
splendidus, batesi, and kunzi are best in very damp peat at 4-6 weeks. Very
soft water though!!!! Never attempted water incubation personallly. Damp
worked out SOOOO VERY WELL!!

Back to Fallax. eggs are very sensative to what we call even low hardness.
I bred them at 120ppm No viable eggs. 50 ppm many viable eggs. 25ppm 95%
viable eggs. Aciditiy is also supposed to be important. I always kept
them less than pH6.0 so I have no personal reference range. They will
water incubate but do best collected and placed in damp peat until you can
visualize the fully developed iris of the Embryo. Then it is time to wet
them. I do not like to give specific incubation lengths as that can vary
sooooo much. JUST LOOK FOR THE EYEBALLS and wait 1 extra week so that you
are assured all of them have reached the same developmental stage.

Peat extract or some derivative is very important in breeding of the fish
and on wetting of the eggs. I have noted that water without tannens yields
very high percentages of unfertilized eggs. ESPECIALLY IN BLUE GULARIS!!

This is all based on my personal experiences. This is what you get if you
ask me.

God Bless, Lee "the Rivnut" Van Hyfte <><
