I've always preferred the term "facultative annual", meaning the eggs can go into diapause under certain conditions, vs. "obligate annual" where the eggs always go through diapause. Many of the Fundulopanchax are this type of switch hitter where they will hatch if left in water in 2-3 weeks or can be incubated dry for several weeks. Annualism, if defined as the ability of the eggs to enter a resting state under adverse conditions, is a binary attribute (meaning it is or it isn't; you can't be "semi-annual" any more than you can be "semi-pregnant"). But that's just the old Biologist in me speaking.
