Re: [Killietalk] Air exchange vs. dehumidifier

I was surprised to find that humidity was not a major problem in my
fish room. I must admit I do not know why I do not have problems. I
insulated the walls and ceiling of my basement fish room with rigid
insulation and caulked the seams because I was worried about moisture
getting into the house insulation. I also expected to have to add an
exchanger for the winter and possibly a dehumidifier for the humid
summer spells. However, even with ~130 tanks all with air driven
filters, the humidity stays around 50%. I even have several open
reservoirs of water. The tanks are covered but I would have thought
the bubbling air would have negated much of the benefit of covering
the tanks. I was so surprised by the low humidity levels, I now have
2 digital humidity gauges and one "mechanical" humidity gauge in the
room because I did not believe the readings I was getting. In the
winter, I can understand the low results since the outside air is
dry. During the summer during a hot humid streak of weather, i will
get condensation on the cold water line from the well but that
happened before I kept fish. What I do not understand is how my fish
room can stay below 60 or 70% humidity when it is 85 degrees out and
95% humidity.

Glad I have not had to buy or run any humidity control equipment!
