Re: [Killietalk] Air exchange vs. dehumidifier
Hi David,
The real problem is the lack of carbonate (alkaline) buffers that
usually come along with the Ca and Mg.
Atmospheric CO2 can dramatically crash the pH of pure distilled water,
That makes the solubility of most metals go way up. Test your
dehumidifier water for copper (lead?) before using it on the fish. The
action, at low levels, can be slow and subtle, but it sure ain't good
for them.
My problems with dehumidifier water never got to that level. Airborne
household cooking grease, cleaning sprays, smog, etc. had contaminated
mine far beyond useful levels, even without any heavy metal problem.
Here in Bishop, our humidity is so low we have cracked furniture. My
water is also a bit too soft (85 ppm tds, 60ppm as hardness). That is a
far bigger pain to fix than harder water that is very easily tempered
with RO. I appreciate the rise in humidity my tanks provide, so don't
even have a dehumidifier any more.
