Zinc is a very reactive metal. The reason that fences are coated with the stuff. It will corrode before iron. The reaction of the protects the iron until it is depleted. Some bridgs have zinc rod placed next to the them in the water for the same reason. The zinc reacts before the iron in the process.  Tin roofs are also coated with zinc. 

Look in a chemstry book if you wish to find more references.
