My water never comes out of my tap on the alkaline side.   Normally its
a pH of between 6.8 and 7.0, if came out alkaline i might raise
different fish.   Depending on the time of year, the hardness runs
between 20 and 60ppm.   Due to my water conditions, i tend to keep fish
that do well in my water conditions... which is one reason Im more into
Aphyosemions and some Fundulopanchax rather then Nothos.  
With all the fish out there, why fight my water conditions trying to
keep something that doesnt do as well in my water then keeping stuff
that does.....   My Non Killie fishs are mostly south american cichlids,
tetras, catfish and wild type bettas from southeast asia.
