Azolla is a wild plant, here in CA, and can be seen in huge, beautiful purple patches in the rivers and ponds of the gold-country foothills. It also does well here in the high desert, in our canals and the Owens River. It is lush green, earlier, but turns magenta when the weather cools.
It has never done well for me in aquaria, probably because it is less
humidity tolerant than duckweed, Salvinia or Amazonian Frogbit. It may
also need better light than I gave it. A pity, as it is quite pretty.
