I've sorta suspected something similar (i.e. environmental background color
permanently affecting adult color) see earlier post:

Once I had some jos plateau eggs hatch out in a white 2 gallon bucket and
raised them to 2 inches in the bucket. They had no blue on them ... I think
the body color was a yellowish white. It doesn't matter because I put them
in a regular tank and they returned to their regular color.
I also have had a few (1% or 2%) that were almost black but they never got
any older than a few weeks before dying. I thought it was because they were
not feeling well is why they were black.

Natural mutation can happen fairly frequently in many species. When you
look at the number of color variants in killies, I wouldn't write it off as
an accidental cross. Rj, if you can get a good shot of them, post a pic or
two for us. I'm interested in seeing them.
