[Killietalk] More (on) BS
Hi all,
Yesterday I was running late for work and so left out the most important part of my process. I use 5 drops of bleach to my gallon jar added just before wetting the cysts. This is what allows me to reuse the same water several times before mixing up a new batch. This small amount of bleach is not enough to decapsulate the eggs, but I feel it does keep down bacteria and pathogens.
In total I use six widemouth gallon jars for hatching. Two jars are only used for harvesting. These I have wrapped the top half with Blue masking tape. When one gets dirty I fill it with chlorinated water and let sit for 24 hours. Then it sits dry until I need to bleach the other one. The other four jars are used for hatching. I fill a jar with new water, add bleach, add cysts, and let bubble 24 hours. The next day I move the first jar over and start the second jar. The third day I pour the first jar into the harvesting jar and while the shrimp are seperating, I fill the first jar with water and add a capful or two of bleach and set aside. I then move the second jar over and siphon the shrimp through the net saving the water in the third jar. Add 5 drops bleach and cysts. The empty shells in the harvest jar are dumped down the sink and the jar rinsed. When I harvest the second jar, saving the water in the fourth jar, the bleach water from the first jar is poured into th!
e second jar ( more bleach added if necessary ) and the first jar sits dry for 24 hours. So that is one jar at 24 hours, one jar at 48 hours, one being bleached and one air drying.
I know all that sounds extremely complicated but it is really quick and easy. It takes less than 5 minutes a day and I get good hatches. Rotating the jars allows me to keep everything sanitary and I have never had disease problems using this method.
