Re: [Killietalk] Wild fp. misaje extinct?

Fp. gardneri, had been around traveling under other names of convenience, as mentioned since the 50s. Clausen and even Scheel don't get remembered much by us today for the incrediblely important introduction of that species group. By the way, in hobby literature from that time period one will occassionally hear of Aphyosemion calliurum which represented the wide spread yellow gardneri of Nigeria with the yellow/red bars on the unpaired fins. A. calliurum ahli or A. ahli back then stood for the blue morphs of gardneri, sometimes (as in the case of Akuri) from the same place. Hobbyists may have been sometimes confounded by which female went with which males. In nature the females have no problem with which were the appropriate males. :)

The strains of the species from Misaje, Cameroon and the very similar gardneri Nigeria/Cameroon boarder were from north of where we usually look for killie locations on a Cameroonian map. The local watershed flows into the Benue River system and is separate from water systems where the gardneri we think of as typically Cameroonian - Fp. gar. mamfense - live. I can't find it on a map tonight, but am guessing that it is in the Nord-Ouest province. There is a circular road (the Ring Road?) shown in several maps of that province. I seem to remember Misaje is located on the northern swing of that route, somewhat near Nkambe. Among other things it is a cattle ranching and farming region. The general reputation of the area is that it is backwards by Cameroonian standards. For an image of the town see http://www.eth.mpg.de/dynamic-index.html?http://www.eth.mpg.de/deutsch/mitarbeiter/pelican/fieldsites.html

Working off of what Lee provided, the killie would be Fundulopanchax gardneri nigerianus.

Probably more than you ever wanted to know. ;)

All the best!

Earlier than that according to Langton.

Clausen, Stenholt 1962, Nigeria.

Aphyosemion calliurum Ijebu-ode, Fundulopanchax gardneri nigerianus Owo
(Parenti, 1981.) (Based on this collection, Clausen described the Owo population as
Aphyosemion nigerianum Clausen, 1963 (Aphyosemion =Fundulopanchax). In 1975
Scheel designated the Akure and Owo, as belonging to the subspecies Aphyosemion
gardneri clauseni. The Jos Plateau, Makurdi, Misajé, as well as other
populations, were designated Aphyosemion gardneri nigerianum. Currently,
Fundulopanchax gardneri nigerianus is used for all of the latter populations
